The 1986 American Silver Eagle is the first year of issue for this iconic series of coins, and it holds significant historical value for collectors. The coin is made of one ounce of .999 fine silver and features two distinct designs.
On the obverse (front), you'll find a depiction of Lady Liberty, designed by Adolph A. Weinman. She’s walking gracefully across the field, wrapped in an American flag, with the rising sun behind her. This design is based on Weinman’s "Walking Liberty" half dollar, which was used from 1916 to 1947. The inscriptions on the obverse include LIBERTY, the year 1986, and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST.
The reverse (back) features a design by John M. Mercanti, showcasing a heraldic eagle with a shield, holding an olive branch and arrows. The eagle is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies of the United States. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
The 1986 American Silver Eagle is highly regarded by collectors, both for its historical significance as the first issue in the series and for its timeless design. Its bullion value is tied to the price of silver, but it also carries a premium due to its status as a first-year release.
