The 1987 American Silver Eagle is the second coin in the series and continues the legacy established by the 1986 release. It maintains the same design and silver content, but as a later issue, it holds its own place in the collection.
Like the 1986 coin, the 1987 American Silver Eagle is made of one ounce of .999 fine silver. The obverse features the iconic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, showing Lady Liberty in a flowing robe, holding a branch in one hand and striding forward with the other. The sun rises behind her, symbolizing hope and renewal. The inscriptions on the obverse include LIBERTY, the year 1987, and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST.
On the reverse, the coin displays the heraldic eagle designed by John M. Mercanti, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with 13 stars above representing the original American colonies. The reverse also includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
While the design and silver content remain consistent with the 1986 coin, the 1987 American Silver Eagle holds value as part of the broader series. Its rarity is slightly greater than some other years due to a relatively lower mintage, which appeals to collectors. Like other Silver Eagles, its value fluctuates with the price of silver, but collectors often seek out the 1987 coin for its historical significance as part of the first few years in the series.
